Vaping Questions

What is an electronic cigarette/vape?

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are battery-powered devices which heat up a liquid, producing a vapour which you inhale. Unlike tobacco cigarettes, e-cigs do not contain cancer-causing tobacco or involve combustion. So there is no smoke, tar or carbon monoxide. For this reason, many people use them to help them quit smoking.

Is vaping safe?

Vape devices do not contain tobacco - the biggest cause of preventable death worldwide. Therefore it is almost certain that vaping is far safer than smoking. While some vaping products contain nicotine, which is addictive, it is not responsible for the major health risks related to smoking.

There are some concerns around the long-term safety of vaping due to lack of long-term studies but the evidence so far points to vaping and e-cigarettes being a far less dangerous alternative to smoking. Research carried out by Public Health England, a UK governing body, suggested that vaping was 95% less harmful than smoking.

How old do you have to be to buy a vape product?

It is illegal for vaping products to be sold to or used by anyone under the age of 18.

Does the UK smoking ban affect vaping? Can I vape indoors?

As there is no smoke produced by e-cigarettes, they are not affected by the UK smoking ban. However, some building owners may have their own policies on whether vaping is permitted on their grounds.

Is passive smoking still an issue with vaping?

While it is true that passive smoking kills, there is no evidence to suggest that second-hand e-cig vapour is dangerous to others.

Will vaping help me quit smoking tobacco?

It is becoming more and more evident that e-cigarettes can help people cut down or stop smoking.

While there are no guarantees it will work for you, e-cigs have helped many people quit smoking. With the research suggesting that e-cigs are 95% safer than tobacco cigarettes, along with the huge range of products available to customise your vaping experience, people have found vaping to be a great alternative to smoking. Millions of people, in the UK alone, have switched to vaping, and the numbers continue to rise.

If you vape and still crave cigarettes then it could be that the nicotine percentage in the e-liquid you are using is too low for you. So perhaps try to use a liquid with a higher dose.

Is vaping cheaper than smoking?

Many people save hundreds over the course of a year after switching to vaping. Everyone uses their e-cigs and vapes differently, and across a wide range of devices and e-liquids, so prices can vary. Users will need to replace their atomizer from time to time and purchase e-liquid but most people have found that vaping works out cheaper over time.

What is pass-through charging?

Pass-through charging is the ability to use your vape device while it is charging.

What are the different vape products?

There is a huge range of vaping devices available. Vape mods give you more options and allow you to customise your vaping experience.

Vaping devices can have large refillable tanks, better atomizers, and larger batteries. Many have options to adjust the airflow, temperature, power output, and wattage. There are also a lot more flavours and nicotine strengths available.

What is a mod?

Mods are larger devices than e-cigs and are known to produce higher amounts of vapour. This kind of device takes its cue from a regular vape pen, but is enhanced (or modified, hence the name "mod") to have certain advanced features such as power output and wattage controls.

What is an atomizer?

An atomizer head contains the heating element (coil) that vapourises your e-liquid.

How do I know when to replace my atomizer head?

Common signs that you might need to change your atomizer head include:

  • Experiencing a "burnt" taste in your mouth
  • Leaky e-cigs
  • Hearing gurgling sounds
  • Less vapour being produced

Which tank should I choose?

People may opt for a larger tank so it only needs filling once a day. Some people prefer their tank to have a smaller form factor so they have a more streamlined device which is easy to carry around with them. Some people want to build their own coils while others just insert a new atomizer head when necessary.

These are some of the things you might want to consider when choosing a tank but ultimately it is down to individual preference.

Will my tank work on every e-cig/vape?

Most tanks are cross-compatible and use a universal connection. If this differs then it will be stated in the description of the product.

What strength e-liquid should I use?

Each person is different but a good guideline is if you are used to smoking a pack of 20 a day then you should start at somewhere around 18mg/ml (1.8%), but generally it comes down to personal preference and it is best to just try a variety and see which suits your needs.

Can I mix different e-liquids?

Yes, you can! One of the wonderful things about vaping is the ability to experiment with mixing different flavoured e-liquids.

Can I vape without nicotine?

Yes, you can buy e-liquids without nicotine.

Can I reduce my nicotine intake with e-cigs?

Yes. E-liquids come in a variety of different nicotine strengths. If you are trying to give up nicotine you can start off with a high strength e-liquid and then gradually ween yourself onto nicotine free e-liquids.

What are Nicotine Salts?

Nicotine salt is a type of nicotine that forms naturally in leaf tobacco and is typically considered to be a more stable form of nicotine over traditional nicotine found in most e-liquids. It allows the nicotine salt to be vapourised at much lower temperatures.

In comparison to regular e-liquids, nicotine salts are generally considered to be just as safe.
